To
date I’ve been on 42 mini breaks in Europe so perhaps statistically it was due to happen, but for the first time in
three years of travelling, my travel buddy for the Easter weekend in Vienna cancelled on me!

Bugger
that, I thought. And went alone.
Of course had I known what the situation would be, I wouldn’t have gone at Easter, when my AFS “sister”
Marlene was out of town, as it would have been lovely to catch up with her. But
I stayed at her mother Barbara’s house in central Vienna
which gave me a wonderful base and some company too.

I
arrived late on Good Friday afternoon and Barbara picked me up from the airport – what a treat! Then she took me out for dinner at a local pub where I had a traditional meal of boiled beef and fried
potatoes. The meat was much tastier than it sounds!
On
Saturday Barbara left to spend the weekend at her holiday house and so I was left to my own devices! Her apartment is really so central that I walked into town in less than 15 minutes and caught a tram around
the Ring Road to see the town.
